A 19-year-old Brazilian teenager gave birth to twins in Mineiros, located in the western part of the country, in the spring of 2021.
However, what is exceptional is that the two babies were conceived with different fathers. Here is the explanation.
In Mineiros, a city in western Brazil, a 19-year-old teenager gave birth to twins, both boys, with different fathers, as reported by the Brazilian media outlet Globo in the spring of 2021.
According to the attending physician, Túlio Jorge Franco, this is an exceptionally unusual situation.
The young girl had intercourse with two individuals on the same day and conceived a child with each of them.
The mother of the children explained that the infants are very similar, but doubts arose regarding their paternity.
She specifically noticed that the babies did not have the same build.
Therefore, when they reached the age of eight months, she subjected the man she suspected to be the father to DNA tests.
Surprisingly, the results were positive for only one child. “The results surprised me. I wasn’t aware that this was possible.
They have a strong resemblance,” said the woman, who chose to remain anonymous.
She subsequently had the other man undergo another test, which definitively established his paternity.
The mother recalled that she had relations with another man and called him to take the test, which turned out positive.
Currently, the two brothers are 16 months old, and one of the fathers has officially recognized both of them.
“He provides me with all the support I need to take care of them,” revealed the young woman.
This phenomenon is, as Dr. Túlio Jorge Franco points out, the 20th recorded case of heteropaternal superfecundation in the world.
“This can happen when two ova from the same mother are fertilized by different fathers.
The infants inherit the mother’s genetic material but develop in separate placentas,” explained the physician.
