The mayor of Bonnesvalyn has set a surprising goal: to travel a distance of 750 km to the Vatican in order to raise enough funds and preserve the church in his municipality, which is registered as a historical monument.
The residents of Bonnesvalyn have chosen a mayor who is capable of doing anything, even putting his own body on the line, to support his municipality.
The chapel in this modest town of two hundred fifty inhabitants, built in the 12th century, is in a sad state.
The restoration of this building, estimated to cost around 700,000 €, is essential to restore its former glory.
90% of this amount will be covered by grants from the department, the region, and the state.
However, there remains 70,000 € to be paid, an exorbitant amount for this small municipality.
The mayor, a passionate cyclist, has taken on a real challenge to try to raise the difference: cycling to the Vatican.
This journey of over seven hundred kilometers does not scare Stéphane Frère, who is no stranger to long-distance cycling:
“I have already traveled across France by bike, as well as Florida and California… So for me, it is also a source of joy!”
